FISHERIES/AQUACULTURE--Winter Sportfishing Weekend Feb. 14-16

Nova Scotians are encouraged to gear up and get out to one of the province's waterways for a free fishing weekend.

From Saturday, Feb. 14, to Monday, Feb. 16, no licence is required for winter angling on waterways.

"The new Hertiage Day civic holiday on Feb. 16 means an extra day of free fishing and hopefully more opportunities for people to try it," said Keith Colwell, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "I encourage Nova Scotians to take advantage of this licence-free weekend."

Residents and non-residents can fish for rainbow, speckled and brown trout, white and yellow perch, and chain pickerel in specified lakes and rivers throughout the province. All bag limits and other regulations apply.

Anglers are urged to put safety first when fishing in the winter months.

"Beginners and seasoned anglers alike can enjoy a great outdoor experience, but I encourage them all to ensure they enjoy the outdoors safely," said Mr. Colwell.

The winter sportfishing season opened Jan. 1 and closes March 31. For more information, visit http://novascotia.ca/fish/documents/Winter-Angling-Opportunities.pdf .
