Government Funds Municipal Infrastructure Improvements

Municipal Affairs (April 2014 - May 2019)

NOTE: A list of municipal projects receiving funding follows this release.

Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill announced funding to support seven high-priority municipal infrastructure projects across the province today, Aug. 21.

Government is investing more than $700,000 under the Provincial Capital Assistance Program.

"The cost of undertaking water and wastewater projects can place substantial costs on municipal governments and their citizens," said Mr. Churchill. "This funding is intended to ease the burden so these capital improvements can be completed sooner."

Funding under the program is limited and ranked according to specific criteria. Projects that eliminate serious environmental and health problems get priority.

Mahone Bay is receiving $59,444 to carry out storm water separation on Main Street.

"We are delighted that the province has agreed to participate in this project with the town," said David Devenne, deputy mayor of Mahone Bay. "This project is a win-win for the town, its citizens and the province. It will result in major environmental improvements for the town, save power pumping costs and enable development of 16 to 20 dwelling units."

Another $2.3 million is being invested this year in two ongoing major infrastructure projects. Funding was pre-committed to Halifax Regional Municipality for Halifax Harbour Solutions and the Municipality of the District of Guysborough for infrastructure upgrades in Canso. The total program budget is $3.05 million.
