Recreation Facility Funding for Highland Region

Health and Wellness

NOTE: A list of grants in the Highland region follows this release.

Upgrading the playground at Antigonish Education Centre is one of 10 recreation projects in the Highland region receiving grants to support fun and physical activity for Nova Scotians.

The region's grants totalling $195,000 were announced today, June 29, through the Recreation Facility Development Program.

"Recreation facilities are important to help Nova Scotians, especially children, to develop a habit of daily physical activity," said Environment Minister Randy Delorey, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. "We're investing nearly $1.7 million for 65 new and upgraded facilities around the province to help people live healthy lifestyles."

Antigonish Education Centre will use $23,000 to make the playground more accessible.

"The goal of our project is to build an accessible playground for all students regardless of ability," said vice principal Sean Barker. "It will be a place where all children will feel welcome and safe, and where friendships will grow. This provincial grant will help us make our vision a reality."

The grants help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Examples include renovations to buildings, developing and maintaining walking trails, and building and upgrading fields for sport and recreation.

The grants support Thrive!, government's plan for a healthier Nova Scotia. The plan aims to create supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity. Learn more at http://thrive.novascotia.ca .
