The Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen Tours Nova Scotia, 1951-2010

Royal Visit 1951

The first official visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II to Nova Scotia took place in November 1951 when, as HRH Princess Elizabeth, she toured the province with her husband HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on behalf of her ailing father, HM King George VI.

Their Canadian itinerary brought them into Nova Scotia via train at Amherst, where 3,000 children greeted the couple during a 10-minute stop before continuing to Truro. Farmers en route were requested to keep their cattle off the tracks for two hours prior to the train's scheduled arrival in Springhill Junction and Folly Lake. 20,000 people turned out for the brief stop in Truro.

The royal couple were in Halifax on 7 and 8 November; their arrival was heralded by high winds and driving rain, which failed to deter the 50,000 well-wishers who turned out to greet them. Premier Angus L. Macdonald gave a welcoming address in Province House and Mayor Gordon S. Kinley introduced Princess Elizabeth to Lunenburg artist Earl Bailly in Halifax City Hall.

During a dinner hosted by Lieutenant-Governor and Mrs. J.A.D. McCurdy, Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were entertained by opera singer and Amherst native, Audrey Farnell. Premier Macdonald hosted a state dinner and the Royal Couple appeared on the balcony of the Nova Scotian Hotel to wave farewell to a crowd of admirers.
