Built Heritage Resource Guide

City, Provincial, Telephone and Business Directories

These resources have proven so popular for various kinds of research that we've devoted a full section of our Website to them — 'Let Your Fingers Do the Walking' — Using City, Provincial, Telephone and Business Directories in Archival Research. Check there for ideas and information about how to use these directories to maximum benefit in researching built heritage.

McAlpine's Nova Scotia Directory, 1907-08 is already on the Nova Scotia Archives Website. More importantly, however, almost every surviving provincial and city directory from Nova Scotia has now been digitized by Library and Archives Canada, and is available and fully searchable on their Website. Provincial and city directories in hard-copy format or on microfilm are also held at the Nova Scotia Archives, the Nova Scotia Legislative Library, the Halifax Public Library (Spring Garden Road Branch) and at various public and university libraries throughout Nova Scotia.
