What's Cooking?

Food, Drink and the Pleasures of Eating in Old-Time Nova Scotia

Modern Method

The Archives' team has had a lot of fun choosing and building this online cookbook from the past. In this section, we offer six recipes that were actually tested in our home kitchens, then brought in for everyone to sample. The selected recipes were carefully studied, conversions were made to modern ingredients and quantities, and proper oven temperatures and cooking times were determined. Some recipes had to be made twice (and maybe three times) before the adjustments were correct, while one cake recipe was abandoned entirely, as edible.... but not for sharing. Otherwise, we enjoyed the results of the experiments (as you will see). We hope you too will be tempted to try these recipes, or others, in What's Cooking — and by so doing, will explore, share and enjoy the rich heritage of food, drink, and the pleasures of eating in old-time Nova Scotia.
