'An East Coast Port': Halifax in Wartime, 1939-1945

The Halifax Chronicle, 14 September 1939, p.1, reported "Two hundred and sixteen men, women and children, victims of Nazi Germany's ruthlessness, when a U-boat sent a torpedo crashng through the port side of the the big British passenger liner Athenia, reached a safe haven at Halifax yesterday."
