'A Vision of Regeneration'

"A new and thoroughly modern city under way in the north end of Halifax"

The poster depicts the hydrostone construction as "a vision of regeneration"-the phrase which inspired the title of this exhibit. It emphasizes the attractive appearance of the district, describing it as beautiful, neat, sunny, clean and substantial. The 340 hydrostone buildings created a light appearance, hence the caption for photograph number 8 which refers to the district as a "White City". The Morning Chronicle of August 1, 1919 singled out the spacious boulevard and neat, clean houses of Columbus Court, comparing it to the "Dresden China city of 'The Wizard of Oz'."
