Aileen Meagher

Olympic Medallist and 'Canada's Flying Schoolmarm'

''Made Art's cream flannel into shorts & Top''

''Art'' is probably Aileen's brother Arthur. In Betty O'Brien's news story, ''The Flying schoolmarm'', (''The Nova Scotian'', 26 November 1983, p. 3, in The Chronicle-Herald), Aileen mentioned that her training consisted of going to the track at Dalhousie where she ran. She added, ''I was the only one. There was nobody to run with me. So, I ran around the track. I wouldn't have dared run on city streets the way people do today. As it was, the nuns were ashamed of me and my parents not too sure.'' [MG 100, vol. 58, no. 4]. Another undated newspaper clipping reported ''Tract Meet Big Success'' even though the temperature was a ''trifle cold'' for competitors and spectators. Aileen Meagher's win was the surprise of the women's event when she defeated Irene Matheson in both the 60 and 100-yard dashes. Aileen is running for Dalhousie. She noted ''Where it started - Dal Sept. 31'' (microfilm 9488)
