Men in the Mines

A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

The glass of this lamp was manufactured by Wolf as part of a type used in mines from the 1930s to 1960s. These flame safety lamps were generally considered clean-burning, economical and tamper-proof. They could also be safely relit underground if they were extinguished. However, the base of this lamp is stamped "John Mills, Newcastle on Tyne" and belonged to James McLauchlin, a Stellarton miner who was killed in the Foord Pit Explosion of 1880.
