Yours of the 3 Instant I received on the 5th from Philip an Indian, at the Indian River, In seply to which, I have to state to you, for his Excellency information, that on my appointment as Commissioner, I examined the Banks of the Indian River, and found that the only place fer attening the Road fer the better, was where the Indian now complains of the Injury, where the Road now is the River is divided into two Branches, with a small Piece of Ground in the fork, on which the Indian had planted a few Potatoes say nearly a Peck, and might Cut among the Bushes about two Hundred of Natural Hay, the Indian never came to me with any complaint, if he had, I should have taken upon myself to allow him Eight or Ten Dollars at most, which I hope His Excellency will not think a Breach of the Power assigned me in my Commission, he demanded Five Pounds of me fer the damage he had sustained when he delivered your letter to me, which was the first time I had seen him, his nearest neighbours say that he dug his Potatoes
