Item discusses the re-distribution of rum in the settlement; Ross apparently wished it discontinued in the rations, but this is "to strong a measure"; Messrs. Gates and Hunt are trying to profit from the sale of rum, but Ross is to exercise his authority as a Magistrate in order to prevent it being sold without a license; comments on subject of commissions (possibly militia); remembers Mr. Calkin as a sharp little fellow at Liverpool, but warns Ross not to let Calkin run him; does not recommend Calkin as a Captain but promises to consult Morris re: meadow.
