Answer to Captain Darby's letter dated 13th August 1842

Captain Joseph Darby
Sup'r Sable Island

Sir,

We have to reply to Your letter of the 13th of August last to the contents of which we has given due consideration, We are well satisfied that your good virtues have been used for the welfare of the establishment at all times, and altho an addition to your pay had already been made in the shape of a percentage on the proceeds property saved yet in consideration of your zeal and [uniform?] attention to your duties as Superintendant we have taken upon ourselves to increase your salary from £100 to £125 to commence the 1st day of January next.

We are aware that the percentage on goods saved is uncertain in its amount, and it may according to the number of wrecks on the Island be less or more, in one Year and this has led us to be thus more willing
