Halifax April 5th 1845
Sir /
I was present at the Queens Wharf at the Sale of Materials from the wreck of the Sch.r Fulton and after said Materials were all disposed of I was about leaving the Wharf when observing persons gathering around the Auctioneer. On inquiry I found that the Hull + Cargo of said vessel was about being offered for sale. Many persons had previously left the Wharf + I believe the Company generally were not aware that any such sale was to take place. as it was not [inserted?] in the advertisements in the papers or hand bills. I did not hear from the Auctioneer or any other Party any detailed statement of the Cargo or Situation of the Vessel and altho inclined to be a bidder did not feel myself justified in doing so without such statement. No sales require more publicity than those of wrecked vessels and Parties at all times wish to consult + prepare beforehand. and I do not hesitate to say in this case that the public was not in possession of the necessary information. But had they been so, the wreck and cargo would have brought a much larger sum, & that the announcement of the sale
