The Commissioners of Sable Island, to whom His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor have been pleased to refer the Statement of Mr. Joseph Darby, the Superintendant, with reference to his claim of £ 166.10/. for extra compensation, beg respectfully, to report, as follows,
That, since their appointment as Commissioners, they have found J. W. Darby very zealous & active in the performance of the duties which have devolved upon him - these duties necefsarily are of a mixed kind, combining the employments of the agriculturists and fishermen with those relating to the preservation of life & property, the two former being incidental to the latter.
That Mr. Darby was perfectly acquainted with the nature of these employments and duties to be performed previous to his taking charge of the Establishment.
That, whenever the occasion presented itself, The Commissioners have not failed to express to Mr. Darby, their approbation of his conduct, which, in the treatment of those who have unfortunately been shipwrecked on the island, has been very praiseworthy: and in the year 1841 in consideration of his zeal and exertions and with a view to encourage the Superindendant and servants, they allowed the former a percentage on all property saved and a gratuity in the case of every wreck to the latter.
