Report of the Commissioners of Sable Island on Mr. Joseph Darby's claim for extra compensation

Mr. Darby, for increased remuneration, on account / as stated by him / of a portion of his time being occupied in the construction of boats, carts, &c, The Commissioners further increased his salary, in the sum of £ 25.. being one fourth of the original amount agreed on. In addition to this salary of £ 125. the large family of Mr. Darby is and has been maintained at the public expence.
The Commissioners have also presented to Mr. Darby, the sum of £ 25. as an acknowledgement of his services in constructing a LifeBoat, the materials of which, however, as well as of all the boats & property at Sable Island, belonged to the Establishment and they are not aware of the payment by Mr Darby on account of the service, of any monies, for which he has not been reimbursed.
That, while the Commissioners are willing and desirous to give to the Superintendant all the praise, to which his conduct has generally entitled him, yet, they feel that they should be wanting in their duty, did they not report, that there have been at times, grave & serious charges brought against him, some of them, they regret to state not without foundation, and that during the past year, they were called on to reprimand him for the existence of practices on his part, highly injurious to the respectability and interests of the Establishment.
