Nova Scotia's vision for primary maternity care is to provide optimal care and facilitate the best possible outcomes for all mothers, babies, and families. Midwifery services help to meet the needs of our most vulnerable childbearing women and their families.  Midwifery also gives women a choice when it comes to low-risk pregnancy and birth plans.

Registered midwives provide community-based primary maternity care for healthy, low risk women and their newborns, in collaboration with physicians, nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary team. Midwifery services are currently offered in three sites in the province:
