MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS, JULY 2017

 Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments increased 5.5% in July 2017 to $721 million, and increased 11.6% over July 2016.

For the first seven months of the year (January-July), seasonally adjusted manufacturing shipments are 2.5% higher in 2017 than in 2016.

Unadjusted year-to-date (Jan-Jul), all shipments are up 2.4% (+$108 million):

  • non-durable shipments account for 65% of manufacturing shipments in 2017 and increased 1.9% over the same period last year.
  • Food manufacturing, with a 28% share, are down 3.4%,
  • Beverages and tobacco, with a 2% share, are down 0.4%, and
  • Plastic and rubber, with a 20% share, are up 9.9% over the same period last year.
  • durable goods manufacturing accounts for 35% of shipments in 2017, increased 3.3%.
  • Wood products, with a 6% share, are up 3.4%,
  • Non-metallic mineral products, with a 2% share, are up 3.9%, 
  • Fabricated metal products, with a 4% share, are down 3.8%,
  • Machinery products, with a 2% share, are down 8.6%, and
  • Computer and electronics, with a 2% share, are down 6.7%, over the same period last year.

 

 

 

 

Canada

Canada manufacturing sales were down 2.6% to $52.5 billion in July 2017, and are up 3.4% above last year. Compared to June 2017, overall sales were down in 9 of 21 industries as durable goods decreased 4.6% and non-durable goods declined 0.2%.

The sales decline was led by losses of 13.8% in the Transportation equipment industry and a 0.9% decline in the Food industry. These declines were partially offset by increases in wood products (+2.3%), primary metals (+1.9%) and non-metallic mineral products (+4.4%).

Inventory levels decreased 0.2% in July 2017 to $73.7 billion.  The Inventory to sales ratio increased from 1.37 to 1.40. Unfilled orders fell 1.7% to $86.2 billion, and new orders fell 1.7% to $51.1 billion over June 2017.

 

Provinces

Manufacturing sales were down in seven provinces in July 2017.  Nova Scotia, at  +5.5%, ranked  1st in month-over-month growth.

 

On a year-over-year basis (seasonally adjusted), manufacturing shipments are up 3.4% in Canada, with most provinces recording positive year-over-year growth. Newfoundland (+12.8%) and Saskatchewan (+13.5%) led the way.  Nova Scotia ranked 4th at 11.6%  growth over July 2016.

On a year-to-date basis, manufacturing shipments growth (unadjusted) was positive in all provinces in Canada (+7.6%), with large gains in Newfoundland (+24.3%), and double digit gains in New Brunswick (+11.6%), Saskatchewan (+14.7%) and Alberta (+15.1%). Nova Scotia (+2.4%) ranked 10th.
