Do employers have to provide employees with breaks?

As of April 1, 2007, employers are required to provide employees with breaks under the Labour Standards Code. For information on who the break provisions apply to and what the rules on breaks are see Rest/Eating Breaks.


Are employers required to post shift schedules and procedures related to notifying employees of upcoming shifts?

The Labour Standards Code does not set any requirements for the posting of schedules. Procedures for such would be at the discretion of the employer.

 

How many days can an employee work before the employer is required to provide the employee with time off?

Employees must receive at least one day off (24 consecutive hours) in seven. Under exceptional conditions, an employer may apply for and receive approval to have employees work more than six days in a row. This is called a variance.

 

Are there other circumstances where employees may be permitted to work more than 6 consecutive days without a break.

Yes, employees may be permitted to work more than 6 consecutive days in cases where urgent work must be done to avoid serious interference with the ordinary operation of the workplace.
