Christmas Day and New Year's Day

There are 5 general (paid) holidays listed in the Labour Standards Code:

  • New Year's Day
  • Nova Scotia Heritage Day (starting in 2015)
  • Good Friday
  • Canada Day
  • Labour Day
  • Christmas Day

These are the minimum number of paid holidays that employers must provide to employees. Many employers offer more paid holidays.

To determine whether you are eligible for holiday pay on Christmas Day and/or New Years Day, see here.

Some retail businesses have to close on Christmas Day and New Years Day . If employees in those business are scheduled to work, even though the business is closed, they have the right to refuse to work.

Boxing Day

Boxing Day is not one of the general (paid) holidays listed in the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code.

An employer may agree to provide employees with Boxing Day as a paid holiday and the Labour Standards Division could enforce such an agreement.

Some retail businesses have to close on Boxing Day. Employees in those business who are scheduled to work to prepare for the next open day have the right to refuse to work on Boxing Day.
