Inscription in pencil on verso reads: "Mr. Joe Cope, having selected a good place for calling Moose, is determined that he won't go home 'till Daylight does appear." The artist is probably Campbell Hardy, who hunted with Joe Cope and wrote accounts of their adventures in the woods. Hardy painted and exhibited in Halifax in the 1800s. Several of his works are now in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, Halifax.
