IMAGE INFORMATION

"Drawn from Nature & on Stone by R. Petley Lieut. 50th Regt. /Day & Haghe, London." Partly based on Petley's watercolour of a wigwam interior, this house construction is a rather bizarre rendering of an A-frame wigwam. The women's headgear is inaccurate, as are the baby carrier and the axe. Note the two splint baskets in the foreground, the keeled tobacco pipe, and the inaccurate canoe (the ends are not shaped in the Mi'kmaq manner), which can be seen through one door. Petley's figure of the woman with the baby carrier was copied by many other artists. The Nova Scotia Museum also owned this print [P113/ 16.2 (4310)], now missing from the collection.
