SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Town of Shelburne Water Treatment Enhanced Under Infrastructure Program

Residents in Shelburne will soon see improvements in their water treatment process with a system enhancement project, funded through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint funding in the amount of $185,094 was announced today as one of 22 project approvals totalling more than $21.8 million, by Robert G. Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Cecil O'Donnell, MLA for Shelburne, on behalf of Angus MacIssac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

"One of the main objectives of the program is supplying safe and reliable water service to Nova Scotia communities, " said Mr. O'Donnell . "This program will directly improve the quality of life for thousands of Nova Scotians."

Green municipal infrastructure that ensures effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced under year one will be directed to green projects, like the Shelburne Water Treatment Enhancement project.

"A clean, healthy environment is crucial to building strong communities and improving our quality of life," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we're investing in green projects that will provide safe, higher- quality drinking water, and improve our environment."

The $277,641 project will bring a more effective floatation system into the existing treatment process. The addition will improve the existing water system by offering higher quality and quantities of potable water to the 250 households the system services. The federal and provincial funding under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Town of Shelburne, which will fund the balance of project costs.

"I have no doubt that this project will have a positive impact on our community," said Shelburne Mayor P. G. Comeau. "We're pleased to see the co-operative effort of the three levels of government make this project happen."

This is the first in a series of approval announcements for projects nominated by municipalities under the program. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195-million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
