SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--Infrastructure Program Invests in HRM Water and Sewer Projects

Residents in the Beaver Bank area of Halifax Regional Municipality will soon see municipal water and sewer services extended to their area and Miller Lake residents will benefit from improvements to their water distribution and treatment system, thanks to funding through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

Joint federal-provincial funding, in the amount of $1,071,332, was announced for two projects in Beaver Bank and one project in Miller Lake, by Robert Thibault, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Barry Barnet, MLA for Sackville-Beaver Bank, on behalf of Angus MacIsaac, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

The three projects are part of a larger, 14-project infrastructure announcement totalling $14.1 million, made in Lunenburg today.

"One of the top priorities of the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is to deliver a safe and reliable supply of drinking water and sewer services," said Mr. Barnet. "Today's announcement is proof that all levels of government have the good of the community at heart."

Green municipal infrastructure to ensure effective wastewater management and safe drinking water is the first priority under the program. The majority of the federal and provincial funding announced in the first year will be directed to green projects, like those being funded in Halifax Regional Municipality.

"The government of Canada is working with Nova Scotians to build strong communities and improve our quality of life," said Mr. Thibault. "Through the Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we are investing in green projects that will improve our environment and provide safe, higher-quality water systems."

The federal and provincial funding for the projects under the program is subject to the formal acceptance of the Halifax Regional Municipality, which will fund the balance of the projects.

"We're very happy with the decision to forge ahead with these projects," said Peter Kelly, mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality. "Today's announcement represents a positive step towards making our communities safer and healthier."

Beaver Bank residents will benefit from both water and sewer services with the two projects that received the green light today. The $750,000 Beaver Bank trunk sewer upgrade project will provide for the installation of a larger-capacity-trunk sanitary sewer on Beaver Bank Road to accommodate the extension of services in the area.

The $657,000 Beaver Bank area water service project (Phase IV) continues the expansion of municipal water services to Beaver Bank Road, providing an additional 50 homes in the area with the benefits of municipal water services.

A $200,000 water treatment project in Miller Lake will make improvements to the water distribution and treatment systems for 44 households within the subdivision. Area residents will benefit from higher-quality potable water with the completion of the project.

Today's announcement is one of a series of approval announcements for projects under the program totalling more than $39 million to date. Additional announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The $195 million, six-year Canada/Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program is administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
