PUBLIC PROSECUTION SERVICE--New Leader Named for Public Prosecution Service

Martin Herschorn, Q.C., has been appointed Director of Public Prosecutions for the province. His appointment was announced today by Justice Minister Michael Baker.

Mr. Herschorn has been the acting director at the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service for the past three years.

"I've watched Mr. Herschorn doing a tremendous job over the last number of years and I know others within the criminal justice system agree with that assessment," said Mr. Baker. "He is the best person, the right person, to lead the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service."

Mr. Herschorn has almost 30 years of experience in the Public Prosecution Service, including 14 years of appearing before the appellate courts, and has been acting director twice for a total of four and a half years.

"Under his leadership, the PPS agenda has moved progressively and consistently forward. He has advanced staff education and development, the application of technology and he has improved internal and external communications," said Mr. Baker. "Most importantly, he enjoys the trust and loyalty of the staff."

The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service prosecutes charges laid under the Criminal Code and various provincial statutes. About 80 crown attorneys across the province handle more than 40,000 cases each year.
