New Deputy Director Appointed

Public Prosecution Service

Marc Chisholm has been appointed deputy director of Public Prosecutions. Martin Herschorn, director of Public Prosecutions, made the announcement today.

"Mr. Chisholm brings 21 years of prosecution experience, including 11 years in management, to the position," said Mr. Herschorn. "His indepth knowledge of criminal law and procedure, combined with a solid track record of initiative and excellence with the Public Prosecution Service, makes Mr. Chisholm the ideal individual for the position of deputy director."

A native of Antigonish, Mr. Chisholm is a business administration graduate of St. Francis Xavier University. He graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1979 and joined the Nova Scotia Department of the Attorney General the next year as an assistant prosecuting officer. He rose progressively through the ranks becoming associate deputy director of Public Prosecutions in 1998.

He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1997.

Over the years Mr. Chisholm has prosecuted thousands of criminal cases, including numerous complex, high-profile cases. He prosecuted the McDonald's murder cases in Sydney and more than a dozen other murder cases.

He has represented the Public Prosecution Service on national and provincial criminal justice committees, including the Coordinating Committee of Senior Officials of Justice, the Uniform Law Conference, the Tripartite Forum, the Court Structure Task Force and the Bench and Bar Liaison Committee. He has chaired the criminal section of the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society Bar Admission Program and has planned and managed many projects.

Mr. Chisholm teaches Criminal Trial Practice at Dalhousie Law School and has given presentations on criminal law to varied audiences, including law enforcement officers, child protection workers and business and community groups.

As associate deputy director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Chisholm has provided advice and assistance to the head of the Public Prosecution Service on operational, personnel, budget and policy issues.

His appointment is effective immediately.
