Virtual Public Library Launched in New Glasgow

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

The launch of the Virtual Public Library in New Glasgow today pushed public library services beyond the four walls of the traditional library building to any location with an Internet connection. Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library users are among the first Nova Scotians to gain access to virtual public library services.

The Virtual Public Library enables library users to search for materials, make online requests, get a library card, renew materials and access the online magazines and databases. Nova Scotians with a public library card now have access to more than 1,300 full-text magazines and other reference resources online. The Pictou-Antigonish Virtual Public Library also offers an online reference desk and a growing collection of notable local history and culture resources, such as the award-winning Pictou and Antigonish War Cenotaphs site.

"Nova Scotians and people outside the province will be able to learn about the local history and culture of our region through the online digital collections and have the opportunity to access library resources throughout the province," said Premier John Hamm.

These online services are currently offered by the Halifax and Pictou-Antigonish Regional Libraries. Over the next few months, other regional libraries across the province will offer similar online services.

"Libraries play an integral role in the education of our youth and adults," said Education Minister Jane Purves. "The new virtual library merges tradition and technology and will enable learners of all ages to access library resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week, anywhere in Nova Scotia."

Many partners, such as local municipal councils, the government of Nova Scotia, federal government initiatives like the Community Access Program (CAP) and LibraryNet, community volunteers and public library users have contributed to the success of the Pictou-Antigonish Virtual Public Library.
