Operation Safe Start Begins May 17

Natural Resources (to July 2018)

More than 100 police officers and enforcement staff from various levels of government will help focus attention on conservation and safe use of the province's natural resources this Victoria Day weekend, May 17-19.

Operation Safe Start is an interagency effort designed to increase awareness among Nova Scotians who use the province's natural resources for recreational purposes.

"The initiative will focus on recreational activities both on land and water," said Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive. "We want to promote a safe start to the boating and fishing seasons, and promote the safe and responsible use of our natural resources by Nova Scotians."

The Victoria Day weekend usually results in an increase in fishing, boating, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use and other outdoor recreational activities. "This increase in activities means an increase in the number of people in back-country areas, which can result in environmental damage and sometimes injuries and fatalities," said Mr. Olive.

As part of Operation Safe Start, enforcement officers will check boating and ATV equipment to ensure it is safe and in compliance with the laws and regulations. The program will also kick off Safe Boating Week, May 17-25.

Operation Safe Start involves conservation officers with the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, members of the Cape Breton Regional Police, RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, federal and provincial fisheries officers, Canadian Coast Guard officers, and Environment Canada staff. Activities will also be taking place in New Brunswick and P.E.I. this weekend.
