PUBLIC PROSECUTION SERVICE--Western Region Gets New Chief Crown Attorney


Craig M. Harding has been appointed the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service's chief Crown attorney for the Western Region of the province. Martin Herschorn, director of public prosecutions, made the announcement today, Jan. 19.

"Mr. Harding's outstanding credentials, his many years of prosecutorial experience and his familiarity with the Western Region and its legal community make him an excellent choice as chief Crown attorney," said Mr. Herschorn.

Mr. Harding is a veteran Crown attorney based in the Liverpool office of the Public Prosecution Service. Born in Bridgewater, Mr. Harding grew up in Liverpool. He received a bachelor of business administration at Acadia University in 1972 and his law degree from Dalhousie University in 1975. Mr. Harding went into private practice in Liverpool until 1981 when he joined the then Department of the Attorney General as a Crown attorney. A senior Crown attorney since 1988, Mr. Harding was appointed a senior Crown counsel in 2002.

As a Crown attorney, Mr. Harding has appeared regularly in all levels of court in various locations in Nova Scotia. He just recently completed a secondment to the special prosecutions section. Throughout the fall, Mr. Harding shared the role of acting chief Crown attorney of the Western Region.

As chief Crown attorney for the Western Region, Mr. Harding will oversee 12 Crown attorneys and eight support staff in offices in Bridgewater, Kentville, Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne and Liverpool.

Mr. Harding replaces James H. Burrill who was appointed a judge of the provincial court in September 2003.

The appointment is effective immediately.
