NATURAL RESOURCES--Valley Man Named Hunter Education Instructor of the Year

Ted Coombs of Clementsvale, Annapolis Co., has been named the 2003 Hunter Education Instructor of the Year by the Department of Natural Resources.

"This award recognizes and rewards volunteers for their contributions to the overall safety of Nova Scotians during hunting season," said Natural Resources Minister Richard Hurlburt. "Nova Scotia's forests have become safer for those enjoying our natural resources because of hunter safety courses that emphasize good firearm handling practices."

Mr. Coombs has more than 30 years of experience and has taught hundreds of Nova Scotians how to hunt safely. He is one of more than 160 volunteer instructors who work through non-profit service clubs to deliver hunter education and bow programs across the province each year. Mr. Coombs is also a member of Annapolis County Ground Search and Rescue.

It is because of the efforts of instructors like Mr. Coombs, that Nova Scotia has had an incident-free hunting season for the second year in a row, said Mr. Hurlburt.

The Instructor of the Year award has been presented annually since 1994 to recognize volunteer instructors who have made an outstanding effort to promote hunter education in Nova Scotia.
