Bear River to Gain Autonomy for Education

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

An amendment to bring the Bear River Band, in Digby County, under the Mi'kmaq Education Act was introduced today, April 15.

The act currently acknowledges the autonomy of nine bands in Nova Scotia to provide education programs for their young people. The amendment will add Bear River to the act.

"This band is taking the initiative to provide quality education programs for the Mi'kmaw learners of Bear River First Nation," said Health Minister Angus MacIsaac, on behalf of Education Minister Jamie Muir. "We're pleased that we can accommodate the band's wish to be included in this legislation."

Autonomy over education is given to the bands through an agreement with the federal Department of Indian and Northern Development and Mi'kmaw Kina'matneway, the provincial body that co-ordinates First Nation education. The Bear River band is gaining autonomy for its education programs through this agreement.

The act also requires Mi'kmaw students to follow programs similar to those of other educational jurisdictions. This requirement aims to ensure students can make smooth transitions to and from public school if necessary or if they choose.

The other bands currently responsible for their education programs and included in the provincial legislation are:

  • Acadia Band
  • Annapolis Valley Band
  • Chapel Island Band
  • Eskasoni Band
  • Membertou Band
  • Pictou Landing First Nation
  • Shubenacadie First Nation
  • Wagmatcook Band
  • Whycocomagh First Nation

Education for other bands is the responsibility of the Department of Indian and Northern Development. All First Nation bands receive their education funding from the federal government.
