Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

SERVICE N.S./MUNICIPAL RELATIONS--County of Antigonish Welcomes Infrastructure Project

Improved water and sewer services in Antigonish County will be the result of a project announced today, May 18, through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program.

The Municipality of the County of Antigonish is partnering with the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia, through the infrastructure program, to design and construct one kilometre of sanitary sewer and water main along Highway 337. This extension will improve the water quality at an existing meat processing plant, which employs 50 people, and allow for future expansion. The project will have the added benefit of improving fire protection in the area.

"This investment will make an important contribution to the economy of Antigonish County," said Health Minister Angus MacIsaac, on behalf of Barry Barnet, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "This is another wonderful example of how governments, working in partnership, can undertake projects that provide health and economic benefits."

Designed to invest in the infrastructure needs of Nova Scotia communities, the program's priorities include supporting long-term economic growth, community infrastructure improvements and environmental enhancements, and building 21st century infrastructure.

"The government of Canada is working with Nova Scotians to build essential community infrastructures that will enhance the quality of Nova Scotia's environment while allowing for sustainable growth in the future," said Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. "Through the Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program, we're creating a stronger, healthier province."

Mr. MacIsaac and Mr. Regan announced a joint federal- provincial investment of $225,628 today. The Municipality of the County of Antigonish will fund the balance of the project costs bringing the project total to $338,444.

"This project will not only improve services, it will also provide for economic growth in our county," said Herbert DeLorey, Warden of the Municipality of the County of Antigonish. "The Canada-Nova Scotia Infrastructure Program has enabled us to work with other levels of government to achieve a common goal -- to make Nova Scotia communities the best they can be."

To date, more than $171 million has been invested in 118 projects across the province through the program, and more announcements are expected as projects undergo environmental assessment and final approval.

The program is a six year, $195 million investment in municipal infrastructure administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a member of the management committee. The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is represented on the program's management committee.
