Barrington High School Gets Official Start

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

Representatives of the Department of Education, the Tri-County Regional School Board, and the community of Barrington, Shelburne Co., helped build a road to a new high school construction site today, Dec. 15.

They marked the official beginning of work on the new Barrington high school by resurfacing part of the access road with gravel.

"It's great to have this school underway," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "We know it's important to the community and the government will be working hard to complete it as soon as possible.

"The community and school board will be kept informed of progress every step of the way."

The two-storey, 8,100 square-metre (90,000 square-foot) school will be built at a cost of $14 million on the site known as Oak Park.

"The board is delighted to see the start of construction for the new Barrington Municipal High School," said Faye Haley, chair of the Tri-County Regional School Board. "This facility will greatly enhance the learning of the students and life in the communities it serves."

The new school will accommodate about 720 students from grades 7 to 12.

It is one of five schools being designed simultaneously by Harvey and MacKenzie Architects as part of a program to reduce costs by building multiple schools with the same design.

The target for occupancy is early 2006.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works will oversee the construction of the school.
