The Asia-Atlantic Project

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

Geographically, Asia and the Atlantic World are far removed from each other, however, an international team of historians is exploring the possibility that, historically, these two areas are more alike than once thought.

On Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 21, The British Asia - British Atlantic Network will hold an international workshop in Halifax to present their findings and increase public awareness of the project. Atlantic World is an historical study term that covers the Atlantic Ocean rim's five continents from the 15th to 19th centuries.

Created in 2001 and boasting participants from Canada, India, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Netherlands, the network has spent seven years examining how historical similarities between Asia and the Atlantic World in earlier centuries, can help us make sense of the complex processes that shape the world in which we live.

Co-sponsored by the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Saint Mary's University, the workshop will feature a special public presentation by the project's co-ordinators at the Maritime Museum on Tuesday, May 20, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Huw Bowen of Swansea University, Elizabeth Mancke of University of Akron, and John Reid of Saint Mary's University will outline how creating a network of historians can promote understanding of key issues and welcome questions, comments and discussion.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is located at 1675 Lower Water St., Halifax.
