Processing Facility Contract Awarded

Sydney Tar Ponds Agency

Joneljim Concrete Construction Ltd. of Sydney will build an $8.3-million material processing facility to serve as a central access point during the cleanup, the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency announced today, June 20.

"I am glad that a local company has been awarded the contract to build a key facility for this very important project," said Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada. "The government of Canada, as a major funding partner, recognizes the importance of this cleanup to the local community and economy."

The facility is a vital component of the cleanup to process debris retrieved from the tar ponds and coke ovens, provide amenities to contractors, and store larger items used by contractors.

"This is another step forward in this project, resulting in both progress on the cleanup and economic benefits for the community," said Murray Scott, Minster responsible for the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency.

The facility will take about one year to complete, and be located next to the north tar pond near the intersection of Inglis and Ferry Streets. It is one of several multi-million dollar contracts to be announced over the next year as the cleanup continues to build momentum. Construction will begin in July.

"We are eager to be part of this project," said Jim Kehoe, president of Joneljim Concrete Construction Ltd. "This opportunity provides a direct benefit to the island's building trades and will keep more skilled workers here at home."

Before construction is complete, a second tender will be issued to operate and maintain the facility, and decommission the building when the cleanup is finished in 2014.

The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency will host an open house on Monday, June 23, to provide project details. The work can be viewed live online at www.tarpondscleanup.ca .
