Spring Road Weight Restrictions On Horizon For Truckers

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Warmer temperatures will soon bring spring weight restrictions to protect provincial roads.

Restrictions could begin near the end of February. Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department staff work closely with the trucking industry and Environment Canada to determine the date that will best protect the province's road surfaces without catching truckers by surprise.

"We invest a lot of money in our road surfaces and protecting them is one of our top priorities," said Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Brooke Taylor. "By the same token, we understand how necessary it is to give truckers as much warning as possible about upcoming restrictions."

The date for spring weight restrictions will depend on weather conditions. When weight restrictions are imposed, a list of roads that are exempt will be published in a number of newspapers across the province.

The weight restrictions on heavy trucks are necessary during the spring thaw to help protect roads that are weakened by mild and wet weather.
