Province-wide Spring Weight Restrictions Start Monday

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

Spring weight restrictions for heavy trucks will come into effect across the province at 8 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 23.

Restrictions were originally scheduled to be placed at 12:01 a.m. on Monday but, because of expected cold overnight temperatures, the department will allow the industry one more night to move goods before closing the roads.

This is consistent with the department's policy of closely monitoring weather forecasts and its own road sensors so it can allow short-term openings when temperatures and conditions permit.

Milder temperatures mean provincial roads are more susceptible to damage from heavy trucks. The restrictions are usually removed in late April or early May.

"The department realizes that truckers need to move goods to stay in business and we'll make every effort to allow them to do that," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "Today's technology allows the department to monitor the province's roads closely, helping us to choose the right time to have them opened and closed."

A list of roads that are exempt from the restrictions will be advertised in newspapers on Saturday, Feb. 21, and is posted on the department's website at www.gov.ns.ca/tran .
