Registry of Motor Vehicles Extends Drivers' Licences and Vehicle Registrations

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Nova Scotia driver licences and vehicle registrations expiring between Aug. 14 and Sept. 30, 2009 have been extended to Oct. 31, 2009.

This action stems from continued unexpected periods of slow service and interruptions with the province's Registry of Motor Vehicles system.

"We appreciate and understand the frustration of customers and staff, especially as this is one of our busiest times in the year," said Ramona Jennex, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

"Every effort is being made to resolve system issues as quickly as possible. We're taking this additional action now though to make things a little easier for our clients."

Not included in the extension are in-transit single move permits, temporary vehicle permits and temporary drivers' licences, which are manually issued by the province, and inspection stickers, which are not issued by the province.

All Access Nova Scotia Centres remain open and are serving customers. The extension is expected to reduce wait times.

People are also encouraged to visit www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr for the following online services:

  • vehicle permit renewal
  • fine payments
  • road test and knowledge test payments
  • change of address for driver's licence and licence plate numbers.

A dedicated team of consultants continues to work to identify and address the root of the problem.

The province is notifying law enforcement agencies of the extension.
