Three Acts Amended

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations Minister Ramona Jennex introduced amendments to three acts today, Sept. 21.

Changes to the Municipal Grants Act and the Assessment Act will result in municipalities receiving grants-in-lieu of tax payments on provincially-owned courthouses. The payments will be phased-in over three years, beginning this year. With the changes ten municipalities will receive about $2.8 million annually.

"We recognize and appreciate the financial burden on municipalities," said Ms. Jennex. "We hope this measure will help keep communities strong, and benefit the families who live there."

Changes to the Personal Property Security Act will make Nova Scotia's legislation consistent with the wording of legislation in other jurisdictions as part of a Canada-wide initiative to use similar language in commercial legislation across provinces. There will be no changes to the intent of the act.
