2010 Excellence Awards Announced

Cancer Care Nova Scotia

Cancer Care Nova Scotia is inviting nominations for its 2010 Excellence Awards, which recognize leadership, innovative practice and excellence in patient care for Nova Scotia cancer patients and families.

"So many dedicated people work tirelessly, on the front lines and behind the scenes, to ensure that Nova Scotians have access to high quality cancer care when and where they need it," said Theresa Marie Underhill, chief operating officer, Cancer Care Nova Scotia. "Often, there is no opportunity to formally recognize the contributions of many. Through the Excellence Awards, Cancer Care Nova Scotia hopes to change this.

"We invite anyone who has experienced excellence within the cancer system to consider nominating the individual or group leading the charge. Everyone who is nominated will be recognized during our awards ceremony in June."

Awards will be presented in three categories: Leadership Excellence, Innovation Excellence, and Excellence in Patient Care. For the Leadership and Innovation awards, individual and group nominations from all sectors will be considered, including: volunteers, activists, health professionals, health administrators and researchers. Nominations for the Patient Care Award are limited to a health professional or team of health professionals who provide direct patient care.

For nomination information and qualification details go to www.cancercare.ns.ca or call 1-866-599-2267. The nomination deadline is April 30.

Cancer Care Nova Scotia, a program of the Department of Health, was created in 1998 to enable quality cancer prevention and care for all Nova Scotians. Through cancer patient navigation, health professional education, and standards and guideline development, Cancer Care Nova Scotia supports health professionals in providing patients with high quality care.

Its work with other organizations raises awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles in reducing cancer risk, and its screening programs educate Nova Scotians about healthy lifestyles and available testing like Pap tests for cervical cancer and the FIT kit for colon cancer. The goal is to find cancer earlier and treat it better.
