Proposed Change to Vital Statistics Act

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

An amendment to the Vital Statistics Act was introduced today, April 7, by Ramona Jennex, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.

The proposed change will give the deputy registrar general of Vital Statistics the flexibility to delegate some duties to the assistant deputy registrar general to continue to effectively manage the growing demands of the Vital Statistics Office.

"The role of the director/deputy registrar general has changed substantially over the last 20 to 30 years," said Ms. Jennex. "Apart from managing an effective registration system, the position now entails increased interaction with other government agencies and enhancing service to meet the evolving needs of Nova Scotians while insuring security interests are protected."

The Vital Statistics Office is responsible for registering and issuing identity documents for significant life events, such as births, deaths, marriages, stillbirths and domestic partnerships in Nova Scotia.
