Agriculture Ministers Focus on Trade, Innovation

Ways to ensure a profitable future for young farmers and the development of a new federal policy framework to succeed Growing Forward were prominent on the agenda for the annual federal/provincial/territorial agriculture ministers meeting, which wrapped up today, July 8.

Agriculture Minister John MacDonell joined colleagues from across the country in Saskatoon, Sask., for the meeting that began July 6.

Ministers discussed the future of the sector, food safety issues, market growth opportunities and innovative ways to increase the bottom line, and ways to strengthen trade between provinces and territories.

"Nova Scotia has a very diverse agriculture sector that creates a challenge when addressing needs through a single federal agricultural policy," said Mr. MacDonell. "I will continue to work hard as I meet with the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture and other interested groups to discuss the development of the industry and work for a better deal for Nova Scotia farmers."

Provincial ministers met to discuss how the provinces can play a more effective role in designing policy. Mr. MacDonell lead a discussion on how to improve the national implementation of programs like Agri-Flexibility to ensure they meet the needs of provincial agricultural sectors.

"By bringing forward the issues facing Nova Scotia farmers, we are working to develop programming that supports competitive transition in agriculture," said Mr. MacDonell. "The goal is to provide greater flexibility, to promote innovation, and create opportunities grow our economy."

The next annual meeting will be held July 7-8, 2011, in St. Andrews, N.B.
