Halifax Explosion Remembered at Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

Tourism, Culture and Heritage (Dec. 2003 - Jan. 2011)

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic will commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the Halifax Explosion with a special evening musical event Saturday, Dec. 4.

The museum, usually closed on Mondays during the fall and winter, will be open on the anniversary Dec. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with regular admission.

One of the darkest days in Halifax history, almost 2,000 people were killed and more than 9,000 more were injured after the collision between the Mont Blanc and IMO ships on the morning of Dec. 6, 1917 in Halifax Harbour.

"That fateful day resonates in the minds of Haligonians, and is a significant part of our history, which is why the museum houses the permanent exhibit, Halifax Wrecked: Halifax Explosion," said Kim Reinhardt, manager of the Maritime Museum.

In memory of the lives lost, and to share in the stories and history of the Halifax Explosion, the museum will host the Halifax Explosion Memorial Concert, featuring David Stone and Friends, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The song and spoken word performance is free, though donations to the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority and the Halifax School for the Blind (Sir Frederick Fraser School) will be accepted.
