Proposed Greenwich Development of Agricultural Land Sent For Ministerial Review

Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations (Oct. 2000 - March 2014)

A lack of clarity in a municipal proposal to re-zone agricultural land in the Annapolis Valley has prompted a ministerial review.

In February, the municipality applied to have 153 hectares of land, which lies between Greenwich and Wolfville, re-zoned from agricultural to residential and commercial. This would allow development on protected agricultural land.

The application did not adequately explain how the Municipality of the County of Kings would protect the Town of Wolfville's drinking water supply, nor did it adequately explain the need for residential and commercial development on protected agricultural land.

As a result of its review of the application, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations has determined that it should be reviewed by the minister.

The minister has up to 60 days to make a decision. He will base his decision on whether the application is consistent with the Municipal Government Act.
