Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

North Sydney, Glace Bay and surrounding area students and families are celebrating two new schools today, Sept. 26.

Education Minister Ramona Jennex and representatives from the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board joined students, teachers, parents and the schools' communities to celebrate the opening of Ferrisview Elementary School in North Sydney and Oceanview Education Centre in Glace Bay.

"Ferrisview and Oceanview bring many opportunities for learning and community activities to this region of the province," said Ms. Jennex. "Putting kids and learning first means providing students with a school that will enhance learning in the classroom."

Ferrisview has 217 students in grades Primary to 6, and Oceanview has 577 students in grades 7 to 9. Both schools have been operating since September 2010.

"The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board is very excited about the opening of these wonderful educational facilities," said Lorne Green, school board chair. "These state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the learning opportunities for our students and provide needed community facilities to the Northside and Glace Bay areas.

"I would like to thank the school communities and the operations department who worked so diligently to make these schools a reality, and the Department of Education for this much appreciated investment in student learning in our area."

Students took part in the opening ceremonies and the unveiling of the school plaques.

"Oceanview Education Centre is like a big family. Everybody knows everybody," said Oceanview student Shante Burns.
