Road Conditions

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (Oct. 2007 - Feb. 2021)

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal said today, Feb. 13, that highway conditions are starting to improve in many areas of the province.

However, the department continues to encourage motorists to take precautions as there are still some sections of icy patches and packed snow on some of the highways, secondary roads and trunk routes.

The extreme fluctuation in temperatures since the storm hit has presented challenges. Road salt does not work effectively at temperatures below -10 C. Warmer temperatures predicted for Tuesday, Feb. 14, should result in the road salt working better and improve driving conditions during the day.

In accordance with the province's snow and ice control standards, clearing provincial highways is the first priority followed by the secondary roads, local paved roads and then gravel roads.

If people need to travel, they are advised to allow extra time for the drive and to use caution.

Drivers should listen to local weather reports, call 511 or check the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal highway cameras at www.gov.ns.ca/tran/cameras for an update on conditions.
