Young people from across the province will demonstrate their communication skills, self-confidence and poise as they compete at the annual 4-H Weekend on May 11-12 at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Bible Hill.

About 250 4-H members will spend the weekend competing in public speaking and demonstrations, woodsman contests, and the Nova Scotia Horse Classic.

"Of all the skills young 4-H members learn, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively is among the most important in their development as strong community leaders," said Agriculture Minister John MacDonell. "Many 4-H alumni credit the program with helping them develop communication skills to be successful at their chosen careers."

At 4-H Night in Nova Scotia on May 12, awards will be given to the weekend's winners who will present their speeches, demonstrations, and entertainment. Winners of the Canadian 4-H Council National Travel Awards will be recognized, and the Nova Scotia council will present the Friends of 4-H Awards to people who have made significant contributions to the program. The provincial 4-H host and hostess, official youth representatives for Nova Scotia's program, will also be selected.

For 90 years, 4-H has been helping young Nova Scotians develop technical, social, sportsmanship, leadership and life skills that are essential for success in agriculture, business, government and community careers. More information is available at www.gov.ns.ca/agri/4H .
