Premier Offers Condolences on Passing of Former Lt.-Gov Kinley

Premier Darrell Dexter is offering his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of John James Kinley, former lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia, who died today, May 1. He was 86.

"Jim Kinley was an engineer, businessman and serviceman who served his country in the Second World War as a Merchant Mariner and with the Royal Canadian Navy," said Premier Dexter. "My sympathies go out to Mr. Kinley's family, friends and colleagues. He will be remembered as a respected community member, accomplished businessman and loving family man."

Mr. Kinley served as Nova Scotia's 29th lieutenant governor from 1994 until 2000.

Born in Lunenburg, Mr. Kinley served as president of the family foundry and engineering company in his hometown for more than 50 years. In 2002, he was appointed to the Order of Nova Scotia and awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal.

The flags at Province House and Government House in Halifax have been lowered to half-mast in honour of Mr. Kinley's contributions.
