Technology Supports Effective Teaching in Classrooms

Education (July 1999 - March 2013)

The province is providing teachers with more technology that will help young students improve reading and writing and older students prepare for good jobs.

Every elementary school will have a mobile technology centre this fall, including notebooks, software and links to online resources.

More than 110 teachers are attending a workshop in Wolfville today, May 3, and Friday, May 4, to learn use the technology in ways that excite students and support their learning.

"Kids and Learning First supports effective teaching in every classroom by providing teachers with tools and resources to bring curriculum alive for every student," said Kings North MLA Jim Morton on behalf of Education Minister Ramona Jennex.

"These technology centres also support our plan to help more children strengthen their reading and writing skills in early elementary."

The province is investing $1.4 million in the mobile technology centres.

Other efforts will ensure students continue to benefit from more technology and innovation in classrooms at all grade levels.

A new Technology Education course will be offered next year to Grade 9 students at more than 100 schools.

The new course will engage students and provide powerful hands-on learning experiences in innovative subject areas such as energy engineering, production technology, communications technology and inventions and innovations.

Teachers and students at each participating schools will have access to tools of the trades such as screen process printing kits, power drills and cutting tools and digital cameras. The skills students learn illustrate the province's commitment to prepare young people for good jobs in Nova Scotia.

Teachers are learning about the new course at a workshop in Truro today and Friday.

Industry and education partners involved in the workshop include: Skills Canada Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Community College, North Nova Education Centre technology education students, Atlantic Photo Supply, Progressive Educational Systems, Fundy Grinding and Machining, Makita Canada, Advance School Supply and Kidder Manufacturing.
