Amendments to Medical Society Act

Health and Wellness

A proposed amendment to the Medical Society Act will legally change the name of the Medical Society of Nova Scotia to Doctors Nova Scotia and ensures physicians continue to be members of the association.

"Doctors Nova Scotia is the medical association that represents physicians in contract negotiations, acts as physicians' united voice in advancing patient care, and promotes healthy living to Nova Scotians," said Maureen MacDonald, Minister of Health and Wellness. "Membership dues cover the costs associated with these efforts."

In 2004, the Medical Society of Nova Scotia changed its name to Doctors Nova Scotia. The proposed amendment will reflect this change.

The proposed amendment provides that physicians have to be members of Doctors Nova Scotia in order to be part of the association's programs and benefits. Penalties for non-payment of dues are broad, including holding back payments and restricting member benefits provided by the association.

Other jurisdictions have similar legislation that allows their respective medical societies to govern their own membership.
